Navrhnout a provést ho tak, aby bylo funkční i bezpečné, aby vyhovovalo všem požadavkům nejen jeho uživatelů, ale i předpisů, je téměř nadlidský úkol. Aby zařízení bylo funkční, musí na sebe jeho jednotlivé komponenty správně navazovat. Kromě toho musí být připojeno do napájecí sítě a prostřednictvím řídicích a pomocných obvodů musí navazovat na další, a to i neelektrická zařízení, s kterými musí bezchybně komunikovat. Přitom hotové elektrické zařízení je výsledkem spolupráce konstruktérů, projektantů, pracovníků provádějících montáž i těch, kteří se starají o jeho provoz. Ti všichni na sebe ve své práci musí navazovat, ti všichni musí používat stejnou řeč. Podstatnou součástí dorozumívacího jazyka elektrotechniků je značení elektrických předmětů, zařízení a jejich jednotlivých komponentů. Je samozřejmé, že dnes již není možné, vzhledem ke vzrůstající složitosti elektrických zařízení, vystačit se systémem značení, jenž se používal ještě před nemnoha lety. Již poměrně dávno se upustilo i od národních zvláštností a stále více se prosazuje snaha používat jednotné značení v elektrotechnice na celém světě. V současné době se dostáváme do užšího kontaktu s pravidly elektrotechnického značení uplatňovanými v ostatních evropských zemích. Přestože v Evropě dnes již používáme všichni v podstatě shodné normy pro elektrotechnická značení, jejich uplatnění se v jednotlivých evropských zemích doposud mírně odlišuje. Dlužno podotknout, že na dodržování určitých zásad se u nás trvá důsledněji než jinde. To je na jedné straně výhodné proto, že si elektrotechnici mohou být použitým značením a jeho vztahem k funkci zařízení a jeho komponentů poměrně jisti. Na druhé straně však, při setkání se zařízením, u kterého tyto zásady dodrženy nejsou, může dojít i k chybnému zapojení a následně i k poškození zařízení a k dalším škodám. Proto je dobré mít určité zvláštnosti a odlišnosti na paměti. Publikace podává přehled značení, které se v současné době v elektrotechnice používá pro identifikaci vodičů a kabelů, jejich žil, svorek na elektrických předmětech a přístrojích a jejich významu v elektrických instalacích strojních zařízení, výrobních linek, budov a objektů. Na příkladech je znázorněno uplatnění značení v elektrotechnické praxi. V přílohách je uveden přehled grafických značek na elektrických předmětech, zkratky a veličiny a jednotky používané v elektrotechnice. Druhé vydání této příručky je aktualizováno podle technických norem platných k 1. 4. 2022 a rozšířeno o další značky a zkratky používané v elektrotechnice.
