Late in the eighteenth century authors began to write 'Gothic' stories as a way of putting literature back in touch with the irrational, the supernatural and the bizarre, which had been neglected in the 'Age of Reason'. This superb new collection brings together stories from the earliest decades of Gothic writing with later 19th and early 20th century tales from the period in which Gothic diversified into the familiar forms of the ghost- and-horror-story. Work by writers such as Poe, Dickens, Hawthorne, Gaskell and M. R. Levicový intelektuál Josef Guttmann se na počátku třicátých let 20. století stal členem vedení Komunistické strany Československa. Se stranou se rozešel kvůli strategii Kominterny, která v roce 1933 pomohla Hitlerovi k moci. Z ostrého kritika Stalinovy diktatury i jeho zahraniční politiky se stal význačný levicový oponent. Československo opustil koncem roku 1938 a o tři roky později se usadil v New Yorku, kde pod pseudonymem působil jako přední znalec dění v sovětském bloku a kritik totalitarismu. Byl také autorem prvních článků o antisemitském charakteru procesu s Rudolfem Slánským. Jeho české texty z třicátých let spolu se studiemi a eseji o povaze komunistických režimů, genocidě a antisemitismu psanými již ve Spojených státech vycházejí u nás poprvé.</p>
